Witnesses Testify to Brutality of Attack in Israel

The New York Times has issued the results of an investigation into reports of sexual violence that took place during the October 7 terrorist attack in Israel. The investigation found that Hamas used sexual violence, including rape and genital mutilation, in a systematic manner against victims. Explicit details are provided, based largely on video evidence from the body cameras of Hamas fighters as well as security footage. Unfortunately, a considerable amount of physical evidence was lost after bodies were quickly buried per Jewish tradition and out of respect for the dead. Several soldiers, volunteer medics, and eyewitnesses were interviewed to share their accounts of sexual abuse and brutality. No survivors have spoken out, but Israel’s Ministry of Welfare and Social Affairs reports that there are at least three female and one male survivor who endured sexual assault. “Many people are looking for the golden evidence, of a woman who will testify about what happened to her. But don’t look for that, don’t put this pressure on this woman,” said Orit Sulitzeanu, executive director of the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel. “The corpses tell the story.”

Thousands of Pregnant Women in Gaza Without Medical Care

The United Nations estimates that over fifty thousand pregnant women are at risk in Gaza due to a severe shortage of healthcare facilities, fifteen percent of whom are expected to experience birth or pregnancy-related complications. Approximately 180 babies are being born in Gaza daily, but women lack access to safe facilities for these births. Many healthcare facilities have been destroyed by Israeli offensives, with only 25 percent of hospitals functioning and only seven of twenty-two UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) health centers operating. Doctors have reported needing to give cesareans without anesthetic and being forced to conduct emergency hysterectomies without the proper medical equipment. In a statement by the UNRWA, doctors and midwives are “doing everything possible to provide care for post-natal and high-risk pregnant women.” The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports over twenty-one thousand deaths at this time of publication.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has approved the first armored vest designed to fit a woman’s body. The new vest is lighter, with a curved armor plate to better accommodate the shape of female soldiers. “Since women have narrower shoulders and a wider pelvis than men, it was uncomfortable for the servicemen to handle weapons in the 'male' version of the vest,” said Oleksandr Sharko, Chief Specialist of the Central Department for Development and Support of Material Support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Earlier in the conflict, volunteers were tailoring women’s military uniforms to fit better. According to recent reporting, over forty thousand women serve in Ukraine’s military, with five thousand on the front lines.
